About Brisbane:
Anyone that still thinks of Brisbane as a provincial backwater is living in the past. The city is also much more than just a gateway to the beaches, water parks and surfing of the Sunshine and Gold Coasts. Set on the picturesque Brisbane River and with year round sunny weather, the city is perfect for anyone who enjoys the outdoors. Furthermore, Brisbane has varied cultural and thriving sporting scenes too, including; casinos aplenty, quality sports teams, nightlife for all tastes, galleries, museums and theatres. As The Lonely Planet says; 'A climate this good, and culture too? It must be paradise.'
Getting There:
Brisbane Eagle Farm Airport is located 13 km Northeast of the city centre. It's a busy airport with flight connections to all over the world.
There are fast coach services to Brisbane as well as the Gold and Sunshine Coasts. Coaches to Brisbane city centre depart every 15 minutes between 5.00am and 7.30pm, and then every 30 minutes from 7.30pm to 10.45pm. Price: Australian $9.00 one-way.
There is also a train from the airport to Brisbane. It departs every 15 minutes, and journey time is 22 minutes. Trains run from 5.00am to 9.00pm. Tickets cost Australian $10.00 one-way, and are available through IBS.
Taxis depart from both domestic and international terminals. The cost to get to the centre of Brisbane is about Australian $25.00. Journey time is about 35 minutes.
Getting Around:
Brisbane city centre is compact, and easily investigated on foot. Nonetheless, the city's public transport system is good.
There are three types of bus; normal ones that travel around the city centre, Cityxpress services that run between the suburbs and the centre of town, and 'Rockets', which are fast commuter buses that operate during rush hours. Fares start from Australian $1.40.
The Citytrain railway network has seven lines linking the outlying suburbs with the centre. Cost: Australian $1.50.
City Cats operate a speedy ferry service along the river. There are also 3 cross-river ferries. Fares start from Australian $1.40.
Brisbane has some great bike tracks, and the perfect climate for cycling. There are several bike hire outlets. Prices start from Australian $9.00 per hour or $20.00 per day.
Travelpasses are good value. There are 2 types, both lasting 1 day and allowing you to use all forms of public transport. An Off-Peak Saver card costs $6.00, and permits you travel outside of rush hours. A Day Rover costs $8.00, but has no time restrictions.
