Old Town
All Istanbul's main sights can be found in this area, including the Blue Mosque, Aya Sofya, Topkapi Palace and the Grand Bazaar. It's also the home to many tasty yet affordable restaurants. This is the place to stay for visitors wanting to see the traditional (if a little touristy) side of Istanbul.

A combination of small shops, hans (larger workshops), offices intermingled with boutique hotels, traditional Turkish restaurants as well as Turkish and foriegn-language bookstores. About Istanbul:
Occupying a strategic position between Europe and Asia, there has been a settlement on the site that Istanbul now stands since 657 BC. Through its various guises as Byzantium and Constantinople it's been the capital of both the Roman and Byzantine empires. And there are traces of this rich history, both Christian and Muslim, all around visitors as they wander through Istanbul. Today, Istanbul is one of Europe's most colourful and cheap cities, with a progressive Islamic culture and great food complimenting the remnants of the past.
Getting There:
Atatûrk Airport is the main international airport. It is 24 km West of the city
There are a number of ways of getting from Atatûrk Airport into Istanbul. These are our suggestions.
Taxi - The quickest way into the city centre. The fare is between US$ 15.00 and US$ 20.00. Travel time is about 30 minutes.
Shuttle bus - There are various companies offering shuttle bus services to your hotel. Look out for their kiosks at the airport. Travel time is around 30 to 50 minutes, and the cost is US$ 10.00.
Metro - This is the cheapest way to get to the city centre. It costs US$ 1.00. There is a station at the airport, which goes to Aksaray. Journey time is about 30 minutes. From Aksaray a taxi to Sultianahmet or Taksim will cost between US$ 2.00 and 6.00.
Havas Airport Bus - This is another good way to get into the city. Like the Metro, the bus goes to Aksaray. Journey time is between 35 and 60 minutes, and the cost is US$ 3.50. Buses run every half an hour between 6.00 am and 23.30 pm.
Getting Around:
Walking is the best way to explore Sultianahmet, the most historic part of the city. The public transport system is not well integrated, but is readily available and cheap. Remember that it gets crowded during rush-hour.
Metro - Istanbul's metro system is under construction, but some lines are already in service. Tickets cost US$ 0.40, and services are frequent.
Bus - There are two types. Official IETT buses owned by the city don't accept cash fares. You must buy your ticket before boarding. There will be kiosks near the major stops. Privately owned Ozel Halk Otobusu (- People's Buses) run similar routes and allow you to pay on board or by ticket. Fares are US$ 0.60, although you may get a discount with an ISIC card.
Trams - There are 2 routes. The main one operates between the docks in Eminonu via Sultianahmet to Zeytinburnu. Buy tickets from the same places as for buses. Cost: US$ 0.40.
Taxi - There are loads of taxis. Most of them have honest drivers, however some of them do not! All taxis have meters, and it is illegal for a taxi driver to refuse to switch his on. Prices rise 50% at night. Sample fare: Sultianahmet to Taksim - US$ 5.00.
Ferry - There are many routes across the Bosphorus. Journeys of up to 30 minutes cost about US$ 1.00, longer ones are US$2.00. Buy your ticket from an agent in a booth.
