About Amsterdam: With its liberal drug laws, famous red light district and hectic nightlife, Amsterdam is a magnet for young travellers from the world over. While the city offers plenty of entertainment after dark, it is also famous for it' canals, bicycles, cafes and museums. The Vondelpark offers an oasis in the middle of the city, drawing in young urban dwellers and tourists alike. Great for a short break. Book early if you want to visit on a weekend!

Getting There: Amsterdam Schipol Airport (AMS) is 18km southwest of the city centre.
Trains to Central Station leave every 15 minutes and take approx 15-20 minutes. You can buy a single ticket for EUR 3.10 from the central court of Schipol Plaza.
If arriving into Centraal Station by train, you can either walk into the centre via Damrak or Voorburgwal or you can take a tram from outside the station. Most tramlines stop here. You can purchase a Strippenkaart from the Central Station.

Getting Around: Amsterdam is a compact city, most of which can be seen on foot. It also has a comprehensive public transport network of trams, buses and the metro. Trams link the central station with the Dam Square, Leideseplein and the Museum Quarter. A Strippenkaart can be purchased from the airport, the station and some hotels for about EUR 6.20, which will allow you to travel multiple journeys on public transport.

Good things come in small packages as this cute canalside hotel proves. What was once an art gallery is now a warren of clean, cosy rooms built around a super-kitsch breakfast room - reason enough to book in for one of their morning buffets! There's no elevator and the steps to rooms are steep, but there's good strong coffee to revive you afterwards and the canal views make the climb more than worth it. (Friday and Saturday require a minimum of 3 nights stay)

Shiny new but with an old-school style of its own, Zeeburg is making waves in Dutch hostel design. Set in a beautiful early 1900s building - that used to serve as a school - its interior is cutting-edge cool, with dorms designed by Edward van Vliet and a film house and theatre right next door. Bury your last euro in the buzzing bar, challenge your travel pals to a mighty pool marathon, or devour some hearty Dutch cooking in the cosy canteen. And if you're going Dutch in more way than one, there's a safe shed to park your bike, and you'll even get a free bicycle bell if you make the opening offer!
