About New York:
New York, New York! We all know from film the great icons of the city - Central Park, Statue of Liberty, West Side Story, 5th Avenue, the Empire State, Wall Street. But experience this city for yourself - feel the energy as you walk down 5th Avenue being beeped at by yellow cabs; feel the excitement flying over the city in a helicopter! And do as the New Yorkers do - eat brunch in a traditional NY deli. Eggs over easy or sunny side up?
Getting There:
JF Kennedy Airport (JFK) (15miles east of Manhattan).
Taxis into midtown Manhattan cost US$30-40 fixed rate (bridges and tolls extra). Allow an hour. Manhattan to JFK costs US$45-55 (bridges and tolls extra). Allow up to 2 hours depending on time of day.
Newark Airport (EWR) is 10 miles west in New Jersey. Taxi costs US$50-60 plus tolls. Allow 1-2 hours depending on time of day.
La Guardia (LGA) is 10 miles from city centre. Taxi costs US$50-60 plus tolls. Allow 1-2 hours depending on time of day.
Subway - Go to the ground transportation desks in the arrival terminals of all the above airports for info on best subway routes into city centre.
Transfer - pre-book through STA Travel; cheapest and most reliable way to get from any NYC airport to city centre.
Getting Around:
Good advice is to walk to the sights during the day, then rely on getting the subway back to your hotel/hostel at the end of the day. That way you see everything above ground and preserve legs and feet for the next day's walking around!
New York subway and bus fares are USD1.50 per trip. One-day 'Fun Pass' - allows unlimited rides for USD4; valid from first use to 3 AM the following day so you don't get caught out on a late night. One week unlimited pass costs around USD17. Passes can be bought at subway stations.
